Willie Mays warns to stay away from blasting caps in goofy 1960s PSA; Tom Hanks approves

During his appearance earlier this month on The Nerdist podcast the one and only Tom Hanks made a quick mention of an old Willie Mays public service announcement he and his brother used to see on TV. It’s hard to tell the exact date of the PSA but what’s obvious is that it was filmed when Mays was on the San Francisco Giants, a team he played for from 1958 to 1972.

Hanks mentioned that it was a local PSA but a discussion on MetaFilter makes it clear that the Mays spot was by no means the only anti-blasting caps message on TV in the 1950s and ‘60s. It’s a good thing, too because we certainly wouldn’t want those awful blasting caps to take out all those kids again…

    Well, if Willie Mays says to keep away from those darn blasting caps, be safe, and play baseball….Im there, baby!
