Zinedine Zidane’s headbutt is immortalized with a new statue in France

Zinedine Zidane’s famous headbutt during the 2006 World Cup is now on display at the Pompidou Centre in Paris. It’s a remembrance of the match that saw the French superstar end his career by making more out of a red card penalty than anyone else in history. Popular belief reports Zidane blasted Italian defender Marco Materazzi in the chest because he made a racist crack about Zidane’s family member. Hey, if Zidane was going to get kicked out of a World Cup match at least he made it worth it.

Italy would go onto win the game – and World Cup – because of the penalty differential, although it’s clear the French fans aren’t too bothered by the loss.
