As a Bills fan, it isn’t easy to admit that I don’t really have a problem with Tom Brady or Bill Belichick. They seem like jerks, yeah, but so does Ralph Wilson and they’ve at least had some success. I wanted the Patriots to beat Baltimore last week because (aside from having money on them, sorry Bills) it’s fun to watch the best teams play.
I’ve never been brave enough to defend Brady at a bar, at work, at games, at school, in the grocery store, the list goes on but you get it. People here hate Brady. Yesterday in Indianapolis made me want to join in on the hate and, almost, feel bad for betting on Brady to beat Eli Manning next weekend.
Terrible Tom was describing his father’s support for him when he remarked, “I don’t know if you guys have ever been to the hotels in Buffalo, they’re not the nicest places in the world, but he would still travel to those.”
It couldn’t have been more unnecessary. I can absolutely see why pro athletes wouldn’t want to come to Buffalo. Based on what they see, it’s a dump. I doubt many players take the time to go to Elmwood or check out the waterfront. Based on HBO’s two seasons of 24/7 the chophouse is the only nice restaurant we have. But Brady could’ve easily just said his dad stayed in dumpy hotels in order to watch him play rather than specifying the locale.
At least I’ll have more of a reason to root against him.
UPDATE: Jerry Sullivan at the Buffalo News followed up with Brady after that comment. Find it here.
